When Everything Takes Twice the Effort and Nobody Sees It
Does your teen...
• Worry constantly or avoid social situations?
• Become overwhelmed when plans change?
• Struggle to make or keep friends?
• Feel stuck, shut down, or afraid of growing up?
• Seem anxious about school, college, or becoming more independent?
If so, you're not alone—and your family doesn't have to figure it out on your own.
Your child is working harder than anyone realizes. They are using every bit of energy they have just to keep up with what seems to come naturally to everyone else. Getting out the door. Remembering what they need. Sitting through a class without losing the thread halfway through.
And from the outside, it can look like they are not trying. Like they do not care. Like if they would just focus, just pay attention, just try harder, everything would be fine.
You know that is not what is happening. You have watched them try. You have watched them forget something they were told ten minutes ago and beat themselves up over it. You have watched the frustration build until it turns into a meltdown or a shutdown that has nothing to do with attitude and everything to do with a brain that processes the world differently.
You are not looking for someone to fix your child. You are looking for someone who understands how their brain works and can help them build a life that works with it, not against it.

ADHD Therapy That Goes Beyond Attention
ADHD is never just about focus. For the teens and young adults I work with, it shows up in executive functioning, emotional regulation, social relationships, self-esteem, and the constant exhaustion of compensating for a brain that does not operate on the same timeline as the world around them.
In individual therapy at Creative Connections, we work with your child on the things that ADHD actually affects in their daily life. That might be learning how to manage the emotional flooding that comes out of nowhere. It might be figuring out why they can hyperfocus on something they love for four hours but cannot start a homework assignment that would take twenty minutes. It might be rebuilding confidence after years of being told they are not living up to their potential.
We do not just teach coping strategies. We help your teen understand how their brain works, why certain things are harder for them, and what they can do about it in a way that makes sense for who they actually are.
Is This Right for Your Teen?
You might recognize some of this in your child.
- They struggle to start tasks, stay organized, or follow through on things they know they need to do
- They lose track of time, belongings, or conversations regularly
- Their emotions go from zero to ten with very little in between
- They are bright and capable but their grades do not reflect it
- They have been told to "just try harder" so many times that they have started to believe something is wrong with them
- They avoid things that feel overwhelming instead of asking for help
- Social situations are harder than they should be because they miss cues or interrupt without meaning to
- They are exhausted in a way that goes beyond not sleeping enough
If your child has an ADHD diagnosis, we work with what that means for them specifically. If you suspect ADHD but do not have a diagnosis yet, therapy can still help while you figure that out.

You do not need a diagnosis, a referral, or a plan before reaching out. If your child is struggling and you think ADHD might be part of the picture, a conversation is a good place to start.
How We Work With Your Teen
Individual therapy at Creative Connections is usually weekly, either in person at our Centreville office or online. Sessions are with one of our clinical residents, all of whom are supervised directly by me. I train our residents specifically in working with neurodivergent teens, so your child is not getting a generalist who has read about ADHD in a textbook. They are getting someone who has been trained to understand it from the inside out.
I come from a school counseling background. I spent years watching ADHD play out in classrooms, hallways, and lunchrooms before I moved into clinical practice. That means I understand what your child's school day actually looks like, not just what their report card says. When your teen talks about what happened at school, their therapist gets it because I have trained them to get it.
We also work closely with you as the parent. ADHD does not just affect the person who has it. It affects the whole family. We keep you in the loop on what we are working on so you can support your child at home without it turning into a battle.
Why Creative Connections for ADHD
Beth Lang, LPC | Licensed Professional Counselor | Centreville, VA
I built this practice around the kids who fall through the cracks in traditional settings. Neurodivergent teens are at the center of that. My background is in school counseling, which means I have spent years watching ADHD show up in real time, in real classrooms, with real consequences. That experience shapes how I train my clinical team and how we approach ADHD therapy here.
Our residents work with your teen individually, and I supervise every case. This is not a practice where you get handed off and nobody checks in. I am reviewing the work, guiding the approach, and making sure your child is getting what they need.

Questions Parents Often Ask
Here is what other parents have asked me about ADHD therapy at Creative Connections.
Does my child need an ADHD diagnosis before starting therapy?
No. If you are seeing the signs and your child is struggling, therapy can help regardless of whether there is a formal diagnosis. We work with what is actually happening in your child's life, not just what is on paper. If you want to pursue testing, we can point you in the right direction, but it is not a requirement to get started.
Will my child be working with Beth directly?
Your child will be matched with one of our clinical residents who I have personally trained in working with neurodivergent teens. I supervise every case. I review the progress, guide the treatment approach, and stay involved throughout. Your child gets individual attention from their therapist and the oversight of a clinician with over a decade of experience with this population.
How is this different from what the school counselor is already doing?
I was a school counselor. I know exactly what school counselors can and cannot do within the constraints of a school day. They are doing important work, but they do not have the time or the clinical framework to do deep individual therapy. We pick up where school counseling leaves off. That is what Creative Connections was built for.
How long does ADHD therapy usually take?
It depends on the kid. Some teens come in with a specific issue and we work through it in a few months. Others benefit from longer-term support as they move through school transitions, social changes, and the ongoing work of learning how their brain operates. We check in regularly with you about how things are going and adjust as needed.

Your child's brain is not the problem. The problem is that nobody has shown them how to work with it yet. That is what we do here. If you are ready to start that conversation, we are ready to listen.
